600 or 800 pieces per minute? Choosing the right speed for a baby diaper line

When evaluating a baby diaper line, the first question investors usually ask is: how fast does it run? It is a fair question, but it hides a trap: not all declared speeds mean the same thing. Before comparing two datasheets, you need to understand what that number is actually measuring.
Maximum speed or continuous production speed?
In our industry, many datasheets state the maximum speed: the one the line reaches in ideal conditions, with perfect material, for the duration of a demonstration. Then, in real production, the same "800" line runs steadily at 700 — or it turns out the number only applies to part of the size range.
We made a different choice: when we say 600 or 800 pieces per minute, we mean the continuous production speed — the pace the line holds shift after shift, day after day. Not a test-bench peak, but the real working rhythm you can build your production plans and supply contracts on.
Pieces per minute and meters per minute: two numbers to read together
The speed of a converting line has two units of measure: pieces per minute and linear meters of material per minute. They are linked by the length of the product — and they must always be read together.
Here is a concrete example: a medium-size baby diaper is roughly half a meter long, so 800 pieces per minute means about 400 meters of material per minute. If a datasheet declares 800 pcs/min but 350 m/min, that meter limit tells the real story: the 800 pieces are only achievable on the smallest sizes, while on medium and large sizes — often the ones where the margin is made — the actual speed is dictated by the meter limit, and drops towards 700 pieces or less.
This is why we always declare both values consistently: our baby lines run at 600 or 800 pieces per minute with 300 or 400 meters per minute, so the declared speed remains achievable across the whole size range, not just on the shortest product in the catalogue.
How to really read a datasheet
A correct comparison between two lines is made on four numbers, not one: the continuous speed (not the maximum), the linear meters per minute in relation to the sizes you want to produce, the efficiency over long runs, and the waste — including during format changes, where it often hides. Our datasheets state 85% efficiency and a maximum 3% waste together with the continuous speed: these are the numbers we accept to be measured on in production, not in a showroom.
When 600 ppm is the right choice
For new investors entering the market, or for manufacturers serving a regional market with several formats, a 600 ppm line is often the better investment: lower capital expenditure, simpler operation, faster training and more flexibility for short production runs with frequent size changes. And with 600 continuous pieces per minute, two shifts deliver more than 100 million pieces per year: for many national markets that is more than enough to start with solid margins.
When 800 ppm makes sense
If your market demand is consolidated and your distribution can absorb the volume of a full year of production, the 800 ppm configuration reduces the cost per piece and makes better use of raw material contracts. It is the natural step for growing manufacturers who already master diaper production — with the certainty that the declared 800 pieces are the ones you will see on the counter at the end of the shift.
One platform, two configurations
The 600 and 800 configurations share the same machine architecture, the same spare parts philosophy and the same operator logic: whoever starts with the BA600 and grows does not start over, neither in training nor in spare parts stock. Upgrading a line or adding a second, faster one later is a path designed in from the start.
